  • The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred IN THE NEW BRITAIN REGION, PAPUA NEW GUINEA about 105 km (65 miles) ESE of Kimbe or about 575 km (355 miles) NE of Port Moresby at 7:25 PM MDT, Oct 16, 2006 (Oct 17 at 11:25 AM local time in New Guinea). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time.
