Hoyer Statement on the Passing of Senator Lloyd Bentsen

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement commemorating the life and accomplishments of Senator Lloyd Bentsen, who passed away at his home this morning in Houston, Texas, at the age of 85:

"Lloyd Bentsen was a wonderful man and a committed public servant who will always be remembered for his civility and graciousness, as well as his many legislative accomplishments.  His life of distinguished service is truly a model that will inspire our country for generations to come.

"The people of Texas were fortunate to have him fighting for them in the United States Senate for more than 20 years.  The Democratic Party was fortunate to have him stand as our Vice Presidential nominee in 1988.  And, all Americans were fortunate to benefit from his wise and reasoned service as President Clinton's first treasury secretary, leading our country towards the historic fiscal surpluses of the 1990s.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Senator Bentsen's family.  He was a consummate gentleman, and a giant of American politics. He will be sorely missed."
