National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers'

The OSHA and NSSF/SAAMI Alliance focuses on providing shooting range
operators, developers and others, including small businesses, with information, guidance, and access
to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. In particular, the
Alliance addresses reducing and preventing exposure to airborne lead and noise. The Alliance's goals
include:
Training and education:
- Deliver or arrange for the delivery of training courses on lead management or hearing
conservation issues.
Outreach and communication:
- Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's, NSSF's or SAAMI's conferences, local meetings, or other
shooting range industry events, such as the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show.
- Share information among OSHA personnel and shooting range industry safety and health
professionals regarding OSHA, NSSF and SAAMI best practices or effective approaches and publicize
results through outreach by OSHA, NSSF and SAAMI and through OSHA-, NSSF- and/or SAAMI-developed
materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures (or any other applicable forum).
- Work with other Alliance participants on specific issues and projects related to the shooting
range industry that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.

- May 3-9, 2009:
2009 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The
National Shooting Sports Foundation, Inc. and the National Association of
Shooting Ranges, and the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers'
Institute, Inc. and more than 55 other Alliance Program participants supported
2009 NAOSH Week. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety
Engineers, an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety
Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and
illnesses in the workplace. The theme for 2009 NAOSH Week was "Safety Means
Always Coming Home."
- October 20-26, 2008:
2008 Drug-Free Work Week. The National Shooting Sports Foundation and
Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, Inc. and a number of
other Alliance Program participants supported the 2008 Drug-Free Work Week.
Sponsored annually by the
U.S. Department of Labor’s Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free
Workplace Program, the Week focused
on educating employers, employees and the public about the importance of being
drug-free as an essential component of a safe and healthful workplace.
- May 2008 through June 2008: National Association of Shooting Ranges (NASR)
Best Practices Seminar: "Lead Management at Indoor Ranges: An Overview."
Through the OSHA and NSSF/SAAMI Alliance, Rick Patterson, Executive Director
NASR; conducted the training seminar on identifying sources of lead at indoor
shooting ranges two times for OSHA Region I, State Plan and On-site
Consultation Program representatives. During the seminar, a number of topics
are discussed including sources of lead at indoor shooting ranges, hygiene
practices, and administrative controls. [More...]
- February 2-5, 2008: Shot Show: The Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show and Conference, Las
Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada.
- Nevada-OSHA representatives staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth during the show.

- Hearing Protection and the Shooting Sports [PDF
- 619 KB]. Through the OSHA and National Sports Shooting Foundation
(NSSF)/Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, Inc. Alliance,
the NSSF, with input from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and
Health and the National Hearing Conservation Association, developed "Hearing
Protection and the Shooting Sports." The document provides shooters and range
operators with information on the potential sound hazards generated by
firearms and how to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. (2006, October)
- Lead Management & OSHA Compliance for Indoor Shooting Ranges [PDF
- 2 MB]. Through the OSHA and National Sports Shooting Foundation/Sporting
Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, Inc. Alliance, the National
Association of Shoot Ranges, with input from the National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health, developed "Lead Management & OSHA Compliance
for Indoor Shooting Ranges." The document provides shooting range operators
