Disease Dynamics of Avian Malaria in Hawai‘i Following Multiple Vector Introductions

PIERC Project Leader: Carter Atkinson,Ph.D.

mosquitoe Objectives:
Star  Determine identity, origin and evolutionary behavior of Plasmodium relictum
Star  Determine extent of introgression in the vector, Culex mosquitoes
Star  Determine whether different vector genotypes vary in transmitting parasite

Accomplishments:
Star  Obtained DNA from museum samples of P. relictumfrom around the world
Star  Developed PCR primers for investigating genetic diversity and phylogeny

Significance:
Star  Provide new insights into how the pathogen and vector are interacting and evolving
Star  Provide information that may explain anomalies in current system
