Control of Mosquito-Borne Avian Disease

Star  Identify all larval mosquito habitat in a disturbed, mesic forest
Star  Eliminate, modify or treat all artificial larval habitat
Star  Break transmission of avian malaria by vector control

Accomplishments:
Star  Determined Culex mosquitoes did not use ohiatree holes
Star  Mapped and removed artificial larval mosquito habitat from a 5000 hectare control zone
Star  Successfully reduced mosquito numbers in the study area

Significance:
Star  Potentially large tracts of mesic habitat may be made disease-free by removal or maintenance of aging park infrastructure
Star  First step in the restoration of endangered Hawaiian honeycreepers like the akepa
