History: Food and Nutrition Service established in the Department of Agriculture by Secretary's Memorandum 1659, supplement 1, August 8, 1969, to administer food stamp program, commodity distribution program, and child nutrition (school lunch, school breakfast, school food service equipment, and school milk) programs formerly vested in the Consumer and Marketing Service. History: Food Safety and Quality Service established in the Department of Agriculture by Secretary's Memorandum 1914, March 14, 1977, to administer meat and poultry inspection functions formerly vested in the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). (For an administrative history of APHIS and its predecessors, see RG 463.) Redesignated Food Safety and Inspection Service by Secretary's Memorandum 1000-1, June 17, 1981.

Textual Records: Investigation and violation cases, 1963-69 (6 ft.). Records relating to Nichols and Co. v. United States (shell egg grading), 1962 (3 ft.). Records relating to meat inspection, 1906-80. Investigative reports and historical records relating to fresh fruit and vegetable standards, 1916-49 (51 ft.).
