Subject: RE: [HealthLiteracy 2422] problematic words
Pfizer's Clear Health Communication Initiative has developed some
resources.
(http://www.clearhealthcommunication.com/media/words-to-watch.html) put
out a great list called "Language: Words to Watch". We've compiled the
list and used it as a training handout. It's divided into 4 categories:
* medical word examples: Words frequently used by doctors in
health care instructions (e.g. ailment, benign, procedure);
* concept word examples: Words used to describe an idea, metaphor,
notion (e.g. avoid, intake, option);
* category word examples: Words that describe a group or sub-set,
and may be unfamiliar (e.g. activity, hazardous); and
* value judgment word examples: Words that may need an example or
visual to convey their meaning with clarity (e.g. adequate, adjust,
routinely).
Hope that's helpful.

Subject: [HealthLiteracy 2422] problematic words
Does anyone have a list of problematic words and possible substitutes
(i.e. screening is better understood as test)?
Thanks!
