I don't know if this article will be of any help-my former colleague and I
describe our efforts to create a health literacy curriculum and document its
effects:

prevalence and consequences of low health literacy. American Journal of

This is great information. One of the courses in our associate degree
programs, Communications, now includes as one of the outcomes, "Develop and
increase health literacy through an exploration of health issues, trends,
and terms." I'm helping faculty find effective ways to meet this outcome and
this discussion list is most valuable. Thanks to all!

We include cultural competency, communication skills, teach-back training,
adult learning & memory, and the idea of "universal precautions" for health
literacy in our provider trainings. I'm sure there are more pieces to
include!!

Good luck & please share your final product. I would love to know what is
working for others.

To improve health outcomes we must find ways to overcome the challenge of
low health literacy. A key to meeting this challenge is better trained
healthcare providers. I have been an educator in a respiratory therapy
program for 15 years. Two of the major units included in the curriculum are
patient communication and patient education. However, there has been little
focus on health literacy. I would like to develop a more comprehensive
health literacy curriculum that can be used to supplement the content that
is currently taught. Having said that, I am soliciting ideas for a health
literacy curriculum. Any information would be helpful.
