The Literacy Assistance Center has been doing some very interesting work in partnering health institutions with literacy programs throughout New York State and recently in other regions as well. On March 12-14, the LAC and programs in Buffalo and Cleveland will present our work at a conference sponsored by Literacy Powerline in Memphis, TN, (a consulting service dedicated specifically to supporting communities as they develop collaborative solutions for literacy issues).
As with most complex problems, the most promising solutions to the problem of health literacy come from collaborations across disciplines, areas of expertise, and experience. Fostering health literacy, and adapting the health care system to meet the needs of the large percentage of patients who have difficulty understanding health information, cannot be accomplished by health care professionals or educators acting alone. This pre-conference session will explore the value of community partnerships between health providers and literacy coalitions.
We hope you will consider joining us. Please see http://www.literacypowerline.com/conference2008.html
for more information.
