I my experience, listening to interesting language content is the most
powerful learning activity that language learners can undertake. It is also
one of the cheapest and most transportable. It can be supplemented by a
range of other activities to enhance its effectiveness, but just listening
to interesting content, often more than once, is a more effective learning
activity than sitting in a classroom. Long periods of listening can precede
any effort to communicate in the language being learned, and even limited
amounts of communication and instruction can increase the effectiveness of
the listening activity significantly.
