Hi.

There are different modes of delivery for CELTA. The version I went through some years ago was a 9-month, 1 day per week program for people who were already teaching or volunteering, either with a class of their own, or assisting another teacher. We also had regular observed practice teaching sessions as part of the program and had to carry out observations. (The context was more ESL than EFL, although some EFL issues were covered. I strongly recommend this approach for anyone who is new to the field. I have heard less favorable comments about some of the more intensive programs--they don't suit inexperienced teachers so well, but are probably better for someone moving between teaching fields.

I now teach ESL (ESOL, actually) and adult literacy for a secondary school equivalent qualification, but I am not in the US.

Subject: [EnglishLanguage 4241] Feedback about CELTA training

I am interested in hearing from colleagues who have had experience with CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) training and certification.

For details visit: http://www.teachinghouse.com/course/celta.html

I am thinking about pursuing this option, therefore I would like to talk with several colleagues who have obtained this certification before I expend time and money. I am especially interested in making contact with colleagues who have the CELTA certification and are teaching in Academic (credit) English Programs offered at community colleges and other institutions of higher education.

Thanks
