Subject: [EnglishLanguage 2586] Thursday Notes from OVAE, May 22, 2008

Hello, everyone.

Attached is this week's Thursday Notes from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Adult and Vocational Education (OVAE). All three of the articles concern adult English language learners.

*
The first article, Immigrants Assimilate Quickly, But English Skills May Lag Behind, reports on and links to a new study by the Manhattan Institute. Researchers created an "assimiliation index" and looked at immigrants, ranking them by country as to how similar the immigrants were to the United States' native born population in civic factors, economic factors, and cultural factors, including English language ability.

*
The second article, EL/Civics Professional Development for Teachers Online Now, links to an online professional develpment course developed by the Adult Learning Resource Center.

*
The third article, Hispanics Comprise 44 Percent of Adult Ed Students, briefly describes Hispanic enrollment in adult education for the past three years.
