Another book that is quite helpful in working with parents is

Oglan, G.R. & Elcombe, A. (2000) Parent to Parent: Our Children, Their
Literacy. Urbana, Illinois: National Council of Teachers of English.

Parent to Parent: Our Children, Their Literacy is an indispensable
book for parents, teachers and teacher-trainers. Though written for
parents working as volunteers in schools it is useful to all who work
with children and train those who do. Gerald R. Oglan and Averil
Elcombe wrote this book based on a series of workshops they gave in
Ontario, Canada. During the workshops, they "modeled and demonstrated
reading and writing strategies, had parents try the strategies, and then
discussed how parents might use them with children." (p.xi) The
information from these workshops now appears in this succinct,
well-organized book. The book is simply written with lots of examples.
It's a very straightforward resource for parents and trainers to use.

This is directed to Stephen Churchville, but I'd like to let
anyone else know about these resources as well.

We have used parts of a series of booklets that they have
available for purchase titled: Parenting for Academic Success Authors:
Janet Fulton, Laura Golden, Betty Asin Smallwood, and K. Lynn Savage.
You can purchase the entire series or parts of it. It comes in small
booklet form so it is affordable. We used one of the booklets to help
parents prepare for their parent/teacher open house.

http://colorincolorado.org provides English/Spanish resources
for educators and parents. You can subscribe at no charge to monthly
newsletters.

http://www.pumarosa.com is a free online source of English for
beginners that learners can use on their own to review some of the
basics.

We've found these to be useful.

EnglishLanguage Learners begins

Good morning,
I am an ESL instructor at Northern Manhattan Improvement Corp in
NYC, an immigrant-advocacy organization that serves a primarily
Dominican population.

The students come from a variety of educational backgrounds, but
there are large number of women with children who are very interested in
interacting with their children's schools.

Thanks and I am looking forward to participating in the
discussion.

Stephen Churchville
