Hi Julie and others: The health literacy skills development that was
done in the classroom following the study circles seem to have had a
quite a positive effect on students. During the study circle, teachers
were encouraged to keep anecdotal evidence of students' activities
outside the classroom, through journals or reflective writings or
reports. Teachers reported that students said that they felt more
comfortable interacting with health care providers. Students also
reported many changed behaviors. An independent evaluation of the pilot
phase indicated that students showed gains in their language and
literacy skills as measured on pre and post test and also by an adapted
TOFHLA. You can see the conclusions of an independent evaluation at our
website

Subject: [HealthLiteracy 239] Outcomes of Health Literacy Study Cirlces+

Hi Winston and Lisa and others who have used the study circles+,

I am curious to hear about the outcomes of the study circle process. In
your experience, how well do the learners improve their basic literacy
skills using the topics, methods and lessons that come from the study
circles? Also, do the teachers notice any changes in the students'
health behaviors as a result of this process? By health behaviors I mean
things like seeking primary care, getting screenings, eating healthier,
getting more exercise, or even changing the way they communicate with
their health care providers.

Thanks,

Julie
