Hi Alex,

Probably the very best resource that can be found on teaching health to
adult learners and English to non-native speakers is The Virginia Adult
Education Health Literacy Toolkit by Kate Singleton and published by the
Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center. It can be found at
http://www.aelweb.vcu.edu/publications/healthlit/ or in the publications
section of the Resource Center's web site at http://www.valrc.org. The
Toolkit is designed to support creative approaches to help learners
increase health literacy as they engage in sound, productive adult
literacy instruction.

In the chapter for "Teaching Health Topics" (Section D) you will find
many resources including links to curriculum designed specifically for
non-native speakers. These include:

1.) The very useful instructional PICTURE STORIES at
www.cal.org/caela/esl_resources/Health Eight lesson plans are built
around picture stories that are very appropriate for those learning
English. They all deal with health, such as emergency, making a doctor's
appointment, stress, medications, etc. These lessons and the pictures are
downloadable, free of charge.

2) EL/Civics Health Awareness Curriculum of Fairfax County at
http://www.aelweb.vcu.edu/publications/healthlit/sections/d/secD-p5.pdf
Tons of lessons at various levels of language proficiency.

3.) REEP Curriculum at
http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/instruct/ctae/adult_ed/REEP/reepcurriculum/index.html

4) REEP World (for students) www.reepworld.org

5) EL/Civics Health Curriculum published by Charlottesville City Schools
at www.ccs.k12.va.us/programs/esl/docs/health/Health_Curriculum.pdf

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Nancy
