About the ASRP Profiles
Each of the 11 reading profiles shown on this Web site is distinctive; each shows a different pattern or level of strengths and needs. To create these profiles, 569 learners from the original ARCSRR sample of 676 were grouped according to their levels and patterns of performance on the components of Word Recognition, Word Meaning (Vocabulary), Spelling, and Silent Reading Comprehension.
First, four large groups of learners were created based on their levels of Silent Reading Comprehension:
- Adult Secondary (GE 9-12 in Silent Reading Comprehension)
- High Intermediates (GE 6-8.9 in Silent Reading Comprehension)
- Low Intermediates (GE 4-5.9 in Silent Reading Comprehension)
- Beginners (GE 0-3.9 in Silent Reading Comprehension)
Following that, each of these four groups was further divided into smaller subgroups or profiles of learners, each with similar patterns of strengths and needs in the components of Word Recognition, Word Meaning (Vocabulary), Spelling, and Silent Reading Comprehension. This resulted in the 11 ASRP Profiles that you can read more about in Browse ASRP Profiles.
Figure 1 below illustrates the process we used to create the ASRP Profiles.

In each of the three smaller groups are learners in the GE 9-12 group who show similar strengths and needs on the components we measured. |
In each of the three smaller groups are learners in the GE 6-8.9 group who show similar strengths and needs on the components we measured. |
In each of the three smaller groups are learners in the GE 4-5.9 group who show similar strengths and needs on the components we measured. |
We divided the GE 0-3.9 group into two profiles based only on native language: Native or Non-native Speakers of English. |
