Russians examine education in Aurora

Rotarians from Aurora will be hosting the Open World Leadership Delegation from Russia to discuss and review education in the United States & Colorado. Managed by the independent Open World Leadership Center at the Library of Congress, Open World is designed to enhance understanding and capabilities for cooperation between the United States and the countries of Eurasia and the Baltic States by developing a network of leaders in the region who have gained significant, firsthand exposure to America's democratic, accountable government and free-market system. The host, Smoky Hill Rotary Club, will meet the delegation on October 27th for a nine day tour.
While in Aurora, the delegates will be honored with meetings with delegates from Andrew Romanoff, Colorado Speaker of the House, Aurora Public Schools Superintendent John Barry, educational Foundations and several schools in the Denver Metro Area to obtain a wide variety base of education options in the Metro Area.
Home stays will allow the Open World delegates to experience American family life. They will also take part in several cultural and community activities, including the Denver Art Museum, Shopping Centers, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, trip to the beautiful Rocky Mountains and a few professional sport outings to appreciate Colorado for all it has to offer.
The Smoky Hill Rotary Club was organized in 1982 and is part of the Rotary International that consists of millions of worldwide participants. In the last six years, Smoky Hill Rotary has sponsored several projects focused on education in Aurora under the "Special things for Special Kids" committee.
These include literacy programs and the Adopt a Class program where children are taken shopping for new school supplies and school cloths to start off the school year right. Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
There are over 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto Service Above Self, Rotary's main objective is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.
The U.S. Congress established Open World in 1999 to enhance understanding and capabilities for cooperation between the United States and Russia. In 2003, Congress made all post-Soviet states eligible for the program. Thanks to Open World, some 12,000 current and future Eurasian leaders have experienced American civil society and have been exposed to new ideas and practices that they can adapt for use in their own work. Open World also promotes partnerships and continued communications between delegates and their American hosts and professional counterparts. Open World currently operates exchanges for political and civic leaders from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
