At a city commission meeting held Tuesday, Nov. 7, the Coral Springs City Commission recognized members of a Russian delegation who participated in the Open World program from Saturday, Nov. 4 – Saturday, Nov. 11 in Coral Springs.

Businessmen Karen Zavenovich Mkrtchyan, Rodik Simonovich Symyan, Dmitriy Dmitriyevich Kabachenko, Igor Vladimirovich Stupakov and translator Liliya Vasiyevna Vidanova examined a variety of topics related to American democracy and local American municipal government, including Coral Springs’ unique business management model. They participated in group meetings, planning sessions, and round table discussions with local officials and community and business leaders.

The program was sponsored by the U.S. Library of Congress, and members of the Coral Springs Rotary Club hosted the delegation and provided valued assistance. Elena Sheverdinova, a Weston, Fla.-based Russian language interpreter and translator also accompanied the delegation.

“For me, it was my first time meeting Americans. I was pleasantly surprised with their level of hospitality and openness and to find out that they’re such friendly people,” said Kabachenko, through interpreter Elena Sheverdinova. Kabachenko is a finance director and co-founder of a lighting fixtures and appliance company in Moscow.

One of the guests was a restaurateur in Moscow. When asked about his impressions of Coral Springs, he said how much City Manager Mike Levinson’s presentation had impressed him about the operations of the city.

“The management of the city is very well organized,” said Symyan said through the same interpreter. The mission statement is really good.”

The Rotary Club of Coral Springs hosted the delegation for Open World.

Open World enables emerging political and civic leaders from participating countries to work with their U.S. counterparts and experience American style democracy and free enterprise at the local level.
