Ukrainian judges participate in discussions on judiciary

Today through Friday, three Ukrainian judges, five court officials and two facilitators will attend two panel discussions presided over by Ohio Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer: one on the importance of an independent judiciary and the other on judicial selection.
Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger will talk about the educational requirements that judges must meet in Ohio. Delegates also will attend panel discussions on how to use mediation to solve disputes, the relationship between courts and the media, and a commission that works with judges and the Ohio legislature on the development of statutes.
The Ohio Supreme Court formed a partnership with the Supreme Court of Ukraine and Ukraine's parliament in 1992 because justices thought that an exchange of ideas between Ohioans and Ukrainians could help develop and strengthen democratic ideals and judicial institutions in both countries, Moyer said.
The Columbus visit is part of a 10-day trip to the United States organized through the congressionally sponsored Open World program.
