Winter and Summer Solstice

Dec 22, 2004,
Jun 20, 2005.
For the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year. In the steady march of the year in the Arctic, the days gradually grow shorter between June and December until the far North plunges into the complete darkness of winter. The trend reverses at Winter Solstice, the point during the year when the Northern Hemisphere is the most inclined away from the Sun. Extreme cold in Eurasia.

Extreme cold gripped Russia and much of Eastern Europe throughout January 2006. The cold is apparent in these images, which show the heat being emitted to space from the Earth's surface and atmosphere.

Heat Wave

August 2, 2006.
The last two weeks of July and the first week of August 2006 brought unusually hot temperatures to much of the United States, with triple-digit temperatures. On August 2, a cloudy, low-pressure system passed from west to east across the country, bringing some relief to the East coast and putting an end to a nationwide heat wave.

Heat Wave

August 8, 2007.
The first full week of August 2007 was a typical August week, with the same temperature patterns settling over North America as Augusts past have brought. In 2007, the heat was record-breaking for some. Temperatures in the upper 90s (Fahrenheit) were reported from the Western Plains to the East Coast, with heat indices reaching triple digits in many places.
