Russia's Major Literary Award Goes to Recent Open World Cultural Leaders Program Participant

PETERSBURG, RUSSIA – On the evening of June 8, 2008, St. Petersburg welcomed many renowned literati to the award ceremony for The National Bestseller, Russia's most prestigious independent literary prize. The main award went to Zakhar Prilepin, a young prose writer from Nizhny Novgorod who is often described as one of Russia's most talented contemporary authors by critics and peers alike. American audiences had a unique opportunity to meet the engaging writer and hear his work during his recent Open World residency in Oxford, MS, and New York co-hosted by the Ole Miss Department of English and CEC ArtsLink. Prilepin is also an editor for the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta.
