The Summit will address the pivotal role adult literacy providers and their adult learners partnering with health care providers can play in eliminating literacy barriers that interfere with adults with low literacy's access to quality health care

8:55 a.m. - 9:10 a.m. Santa Clara County Library Literacy Services' (VISION LITERACY) Pat Lawson-North, Director, and Carolyn Brown, Director of Performance & Outcome Management, Santa Clara Medical Center, discuss their successful local collaborative health literacy partnership.
9:10 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. Audience Q&A with presenters
9:15 a.m. - 9:35 a.m. Health Literacy and Adult Learners
Dr. Carole Talan, literacy specialist and documentary film maker, introduces two adult learners, Enrique Ramirez and Kristi Clontz, who will speak from an adult learner viewpoint about their personal health literacy needs and involvement with health literacy projects.
9:35 a.m. - 9:50 a.m. BREAK
9:50 a.m. - 10:20 a.m. Plenary Address: Dr Dean Schillinger, leading health literacy doctor/advocate, practicing primary care physician at San Francisco General Hospital and Director of the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations, a new research center committed to transforming clinical and public health practice and policy to improve health and health care for socially vulnerable people.
10:20 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Audience Q&A with Dr Dean
10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Discussion of existing health literacy initiatives with panelists from not-for-profit organizations focused on research on health and/or health literacy.
11:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. Audience Q&A with Panelist
11:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Health Literacy Curriculum Meg Schofield introduces health literacy curriculum based on a scientific research study conducted by Dr. Susan Levy's research on the impact of Health Literacy in Adult Literacy and Integrated Family Approach Programs. This research study was one of six in the NICHD/NIFL/OVAE national research program.
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. LUNCH
Lunch with small group discussions where participants share their ideas about what is or should be happening in their states concerning health literacy.
1:00 p.m. - 1:20 p.m. BRIEF reports back to larger group from each table discussion
1:20 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. Break-out sessions to discuss ideas for possible local level health literacy initiatives and share information about existing projects in other states.
2:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. BREAK
3:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Large group of breakout groups ending with discussion of next steps.
3:30 p.m. - 3:50 p.m. Next Steps
Large group discussion of what is possible and what needs to be done next for partnerships to move forward with specific projects. Visioning for the future.
3:50 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. Closing Session
Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Eisman, Director of the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement, San Francisco State University, will serve as moderator, and provide closing remarks and a summation of what was accomplished during the summit.
