Napolitano Congratulates Cal Poly Pomona on Recognition for Cyber Security, Grant Funding

(Washington D.C.)- Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano congratulated California State Polytechnic University of Pomona for its recognition as one of 67 schools nationwide honored for its work in training and education on cyber security.

The National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security designated Cal Poly Pomona a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education for the academic years 2005 through 2008. The 67 schools in 27 states and the District of Columbia are now eligible to apply for special grants and scholarships connected with the program.

The two agencies initiated the program in 2004 in response to recommendations from the President’s National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace aimed at protecting what it calls one of the nation’s critical infrastructures.

“This is an enormous achievement for Cal Poly Pomona, once again highlighting their consistently innovative work,” said Napolitano, D-Norwalk. “I applaud the school for creating yet another avenue for its students to learn skills needed to serve the public and better their community.”

Napolitano also informed University President J. Michael Ortiz that the school received two grants in excess of $620,000 from the Department of Education for its TRIO Student Support Services Program. A $267,986 grant was specifically earmarked for disabled students under the federal TRIO program, which is also designed to assist low-income and first-generation college students.

“Creating opportunities for underrepresented students has always been a focus for Cal Poly Pomona,” Ortiz said after meeting with Napolitano in Washington this week. “The TRIO grant programs are making a difference every day, empowering hundreds of students each year to fulfill a dream that would have otherwise been impossible.”
