The National Weather Services opens new Satellite Field Office at San Francisco State University.

The primary mission of the National Weather Service is to provide timely and accurate life saving weather information in the form of hazardous weather watches, warnings, and advisories that will reduce loss of life and property. In addition, the National Weather Service provides routine public, aviation, marine and fire weather forecasts to its partners and customers. The National Weather Service also participates in an active outreach program to inform its partners and customers of changing products and services and to receive input as to how to improve these. Since the National Weather Service has moved its facilities to Monterey, CA it no longer has access to the San Francisco Bay Area broadcast media market. This is by far where a majority of the public resides within the National Weather Service’s San Francisco Bay Area Forecast Office’s county warning area. The National Weather Service seeks to reestablish a presence in the San Francisco Bay Area to avail itself to the broadcast media during times of impending hazardous weather to better inform and educate the general public as to precautions and actions that need to be taken to save lives and property.

A central mission of SFSU is to educate young men and women in the atmospheric sciences and to conduct research that will improve the science and produce results that can be used by operational meteorologists to improve weather forecasting, especially for hazardous weather situations. SFSU believes exposing its students to real-world weather events and how best to inform the public of such impending hazardous weather is an outstanding training opportunity that can not be matched in a normal classroom setting. SFSU also understands it can provide valuable meteorological insight and information to NWSFO forecasters based on ongoing research during consultations prior to these news briefings that will certainly improve the quality and accuracy of the forecasts.
