City of Oak Ridge Emergency Sirens

The DOE Public Warning Siren System is tested on the first Wednesday of each month. This effort is consistent with testing of warning systems around the Tennessee Valley Authority's nuclear power plants. The sirens are intended to provide immediate notification of an emergency to people who are within an approximate two-mile radius of DOE's Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR). The 33,750-acre ORR is located in Anderson and Roane Counties.

In the event of an actual emergency, the sirens will be sounded. More information is available by calling the DOE Public Affairs Office at 576-0885.

Weather

There's a saying around here, "If you don't like the weather, stick around, it will change." We celebrate all four seasons in East Tennessee. Spring and fall are mild and colorful. Summer can be warm and humid; winters are brief and mild.

  • Annual average temperature: high 69° F; low 46°F
  • Average low temperature: January, 26° F; July, 66° F
  • Average high temperature: January, 46° F; July, 87°F
  • Annual average precipitation: 47.14 inches
  • Annual average snowfall: 11.4 inches
  • Elevation: 936 feet above sea level

Light clothing is best in the summer. Evenings can be cool, especially in the mountains and on the lakes, so packing a light jacket is suggested. Temperatures in the spring and fall can range from 40° F to 80° F during one day. In Winter, temperatures range from 30° F to 50° F. A normal winter wardrobe with coats, sweaters, and heavier apparel is appropriate.

Other Things You'll Probably Want To Do

Get a Tennessee State Drivers License

You will need this as a form of identification and to drive, buy, or rent a car. In Tennessee you can get your driver's license in any county, regardless of which one you live in.

Once you have a car, you will need car insurance. The Tennessee Department of Motor Vehicles offers a free quote estimator.

Get a Social Security Card

You will need to fill out an application for each family member.

If this is your first social security card, you will need to provide at least two documents to prove your age, identity, and ”current lawful, work-authorized immigration status." You will also be required to show your current U.S. Immigration document, as well as your foreign passport (which must have biographical information and/or a picture). Each person must have their own documents, and parents must present a birth certificate to show they have the authority to apply for a card for each child. Also, any child over the age of 12 who is  getting a card for the first time will have to go to the local Social Security Office for an interview.

If you are considered an immigrant, you will have to present "current documents from the Department of Homeland Security" showing your immigration status. These documents are identified as Form I-551, I-94, I-688B, or I-766.

After you complete the paperwork, you can either mail it or take it to the local Social Security Office.
