Federal Trade Commission Spyware Information and Program

Here is information about the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC's) new free publication on spyware, software that monitors or controls your computer use. The publication helps consumers recognize, avoid, and delete spyware, which -- when installed on your computer -- can be used to send you pop-up ads, redirect your computer to websites, monitor your Internet surfing, or record your keystrokes, which, in turn, could lead to identity theft.

The publication accompanies the FTC's announcement of its request for a U.S. District Court to shut down a spyware operation that secretly installs software on consumers' computers. The announcement and publication are part of the FTC's ongoing campaign to educate consumers about information security.
