EndNote and Reference Manager provide output styles for thousands of journals. Output styles are instructions for generating citations and are based on publisher requirements for manuscript submission. Despite the variety of styles available, authors may need to update, edit, or create styles to meet specific needs. EndNote and Reference Manager include style editing and creation functions. The NIH Library provides assistance with editing output styles as part of its support for manuscript production.
To edit a style in EndNote:
- Select the style from the drop-down menu at the top of the screen (choose "Select Another Style" for the complete list of styles available).
- Go to "Edit," select "Output Styles," and select "Edit Style Name."
- A window displays, with fields on the left and descriptions for editing on the right.
To edit a style in Reference Manager:
- Select "Bibliography" from the "Tools" menu.
- Select "Open Output Style."
- Choose a style to open for editing.
