NIH Library and Its Print Journal Collection Downsizing

Space in Building 10 is at a premium. In order to make room for three new or expanding programs (NIMH, NHLBI, and NINDS), the NIH Library is required to transfer about a third of its space on the B1 level and remove 7,000 linear feet of journals—i.e., thousands of volumes.

All of the print volumes removed are available from the NIH Library’s Online Journals page or they can be accessed at the National Library of Medicine (NLM). NIH on-campus "hosts" were found for some of the titles being removed from the NIH Library; NLM needed some of the volumes to fill in gaps in its collection; and the rest are being donated to the Iraqi Medical Society to help replace its collections destroyed in the ongoing war. Everything has found a home.

Affected shelving, all locked carrels along the perimeter walls, and the existing Library office area on the B1 level will be deconstructed throughout the summer, and air handling equipment will be replaced. Construction of new walls and offices is slated to finish by October or November. Expect noise for the duration.

If you have questions about the print journal collection or would like assistance in accessing volumes in print or online, please contact Reference & Information Services (301-496-1080, nihlibrary@nih.gov).
