Adolescence

Adolescence

Attention to reading development in the middle and high school years is as essential as it is during the elementary grades. Although many older students can read words, they often struggle to fully understand what they read. Preparing adolescents to meet the challenges of secondary school literacy means teaching and learning comprehension skills such as reading purposefully, mastering new vocabulary, and selecting and learning from materials of interest. The National Institute for Literacy makes available for educators information developed from scientifically based research on adolescent literacy.
