Adult Literacy

For Educators

Those who work with and support adult learners know that teaching reading is a complex undertaking. Unlike children, adult learners have limited time to spend in the classroom.

Given the complexity of the task, the Institute offers these suggestions for educators in meeting the challenge and supporting adult learners in making gains in their reading skills:

  • Build learner awareness of reading needs
  • Make instruction relevant and useful; teach adults how to transfer classroom learning to other life contexts
  • Plan for out-of-classroom learning
  • Work with learners to assess skills, and make sure they understand assessment results
  • Provide explicit instruction as needed to achieve reading goals
  • Encourage adults to identify personal-related goals
