Adult Literacy

Key Literacy Issues

The Institute seeks to strengthen literacy across the lifespan, including early childhood. Research plays a central role in this work. The Institute:

  • Locates scientifically based research findings that help answer essential questions about early childhood literacy;
  • Communicates the findings to educators, families, and caregivers in plain language in publications such as its Shining Stars series for toddlers and preschoolers and A Child Becomes A Reader: Birth – Preschool
  • Examines professional development practices that support early childhood literacy instruction
  • Identifies topics to be studied in future research
