Comments:

The use of SSNs in the professional work of private investigators if vital to our industry. They allow us to open up criminal backgrounds to potential employers (thus making every industry safer). Additionally, they allow us to level the playing field between both sides of the aisle in a criminal or civil dispute. If only law enforcement as access to backgrounds and other information tied into SSNs, it will be impossible for defendants to have access to the same information as their prosecutors, thus making the entire system less fair and balanced. While not everyone should have access to the information tied to an SSN, the industry of private investigations goes through a rigorous training and licensing program that thoroughly checks criminal background and ethical fiber. PIs, by and large, should be allowed access to information not always open to the public because of this process.
