I would like to see the social security number completely go away. And, replace it with a more viable alternative and one where I can control my own fate. If someone other than me loses my social security number and a new line of credit mysteriously opens up in my name, who am I to blame? If someone loses my "new" unique number and I have some other method of authenticating/protecting myself then the risk of a new line of credit mysteriously opening up goes way down. I vote for a complete system overhaul with an emphasis on protecting the individual and a system that more clearly identifies someone as being who they say they are.
