So many businesses use the "last four digits of your SSN" as a verbal "password" so as to make it completely meaningless. Every employee at my cable company I've talked to knows the same info which is used to secure my investments and at least some of my medical info. At the very least, this sort of thing should be automated so that hundreds of low wage phone operators don't have access to my info. However, I believe we can do better than that. My cable company should not be allowed to ask for the same verifying info as my bank as my health insurance company.
