Given the prevalence of identity theft these days it is absolutely astounding that anyone would consider the use of the SSN as a good idea. Most have long realized that it is an incredibly bad idea. That is with the notable exception of the government and the health care industry. The SSN was and is intended as a tax identifier for social security and that should be it's sole purpose. Everyone, including the government (at all levels), should be required to NOT USE SSN as an personal identifier! Anyone requesting, or worse - requiring, a SSN for identification should be severely fined until they stop the practice.
