The SSN was developed for one purpose -- use by the government. The idea that private sector is using it is very dangerous as this single number could destroy a person's life. With the growing number of computer hackers and the number of viable attacks against businesses increase, the private sector's misuse of the SSN becomes all the more dangerous. The need for a unique identifier for the government and medical use is necessary, but the idea of this number being used by a credit card company or cell phone vendor is simply ridiculous. Prior to the use of the SSN in the private sector these companies would need to generate a unique account number for each individual. If these companies would return to such a policy identity theft would be a lot harder since there would be no unifying number to link all of these accounts together.
