“SSNs In The Private Sector - Comment, Project No. P075414” Medical providers are major users of SSNs and they do not need them. The insurance carriers provide unique identifiers in the form of ID numbers. Also DOB, name, address, phone numbers, are just a few of the alternative identifiers available to them. They do not need SSNs. Doctors, dentists, chiropractors, hospitals, labs - all ask for SSN - but have no legitimate use for them. I personally have been denied medical care solely because I refused to give a doctor my SSN. This is not a valid reason for denying medical care and the practice ahould be stopped.
