Lansing Community College made the switch back in 2000 to use Social Security Numbers as student numbers instead of the previous random 6 digit number. This concerned me for several reasons. In order to login to any web-interface related to the College you had to enter your SSN. Although the Technology Department at LCC expressed concern over the change their concerns were squelched. Students also had no recourse for this action. The is just one example of an organization using Social Security Numbers in an inappropriate way.
