Edgecombe Community College of North Carolina used (from 2001 to 2006 and likely currently) the SS# of their student extensively. I seemed like it was used several times a semester for various things from identification to passwords. They avoided using student ID's so as to make things "easier". Of course the environment in the country made it much less of a danger I think than elsewhere, there were no problems from it that I know of and the people their would have changed things quickly if they had any. Still I did not like it and felt that my opinion was quickly ignored.
