I believe that there is a widespread use of SSN data which is not necessary and lends itself to a high degree of risk. This unneccesary usage includes both the stated reasons for using SSN data, as well as the way this data is collected and used. A few notable examples of this misuse are: 1. Employers with online application systems where one of the first pieces of mandatory information required to submit an application for employment is the SSN. - This should not be a requirement for submitting for employment consideration, especially over the web. 2. Organizations which require SSN info when doing business which should in no way be tied to SSN data. 3. Organizations which use SSN data to provide the core of a unique account identifier, and will not do business with an indivual without collecting this data. 4. Service providers (cellular phone, internet, etc) who require SSN data before providing services. These are just a few examples of what I believe to be grossly inappropriate uses of SSN data, especially when the submission of this information is mandatory to obtain services.
