For several years we have heard we should guard our Social Security number to avoid identity theft. One of the suggestions often mentioned is to NOT carry your Social Security card in your wallet. For several years, I have argued with doctor's offices who all routinely ask for both my Social Security number, and that of my husband before I can see the doctor. In most cases, even though I had medical insurance (which did not use my Social Security number as an identifying number), if you wanted to see the doctor, you provided the Social Security number. This year I turned 65 years of age, and received my Medicare card, which I should carry with me in my wallet (you never know when you might end up at the hospital!). Of course, the Federal Government uses my Social Security number as my identifying number. When is the Federal Government going to assist us in better protecting our Social Security number?
