Regarding the provision of the proposed rule that would effectively require providers of free software to provide a warrantee for the product: Such a rule would dry up the pool of free software available to consumers.

I, myself, am writing programs in a few projects. Certain programs I am planning to release for anyone to use, too. If this rule is implemented, then I won't be so generous. You get what you pay for, and if you didn't pay for it, don't whine if it doesn't work.

Additionally, such action would cut off a source of programs for me, as fewer would be willing to share their works for free.

Any rule regarding warrantees should only state that the warrantee policy has to be clearly expressed.

I've been using the word "rule" above in my comments, because any unilateral action in setting policy by the FTC cannot be called a "law". Only congress can make a "law".
