Kansas Teachers Win National Lesson Competition
Teaching Our Documents: A National History Day Lesson Competition for Educators
WASHINGTON – June 8, 2004 – The National Archives, National History Day (NHD) and Siemens announced today that Clayton Lucas, a social studies teacher, and Michelle Stie-Buckles, an English teacher at Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy in Overland Park, Kan., are the middle school division winners of the 2004 "Teaching Our Documents: A Lesson Competition for Educators." |

Lucas and Stie-Buckles’ winning lesson plan titled "Encountering the Plains – African American Homesteading on the Central Plains" focuses on black homesteaders in post-Civil War America. The lesson engaged students in an evaluation of three key documents in American History: The Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Homestead Act and the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Archivist of the United States John W. Carlin, Vice President of Government Affairs for Siemens Patricia Sherman and USA Freedom Corp Director of Public Liaison Therese Lyons will recognize the winners at the NHD awards ceremony on June 17 at 8:30 a.m. in Cole Field House at the University of Maryland. NHD will publish the educators’ lesson in the 2004-2005 "Our Documents Teacher Sourcebook.” The teachers will receive commemorative plaques and attend the National Archives "Primarily Teaching Workshop.”
"These lesson plans will contribute immeasurably to the excitement of learning about history. We are delighted to have teachers be a part of the National History Day competition and congratulate the winners," Carlin said.
