Description
This interactive algorithm on mental health specialty in the treatment of acute stress disorder/post-traumatic stress disorder (ASD/PTSD) is derived from the evidence-based clinical practice guideline Management of Post Traumatic Stress, developed by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense.
This algorithm addresses the following topics:
- Patient presenting to mental health with suspected PTSD
- Obtain medical history, physical examination, mental status examination, psychosocial assessment, and appropriate lab tests
- Does patient meet Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-IV criteria for ASD/PTSD?
- Educate patient and family about treatment options; develop collaborative and interdisciplinary treatment plan
- Initiate therapy for PTSD
- PTSD with comorbid symptoms (addiction, substance use disorder, psychosis, bipolar)
- Reassess PTSD symptoms, diagnostic status and functional status, quality of life, additional treatment needs, and patient preferences
- Followup in mental health
