Abstract: This data set contains township, range, and section boundaries from the public land survey system for Oklahoma. This data set was created by appending and editing U.S. Geological Survey Digital Line Graph data sets based on 1:100,000-scale topographic quadrangles. Introduction: This data set contains township, range, and section boundaries from the public land survey system for Oklahoma. This data set was created by appending and editing U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Digital Line Graph (DLG) data sets (1994) based on 1:100,000-scale topographic quadrangles. Purpose: This data set is intended for displaying the public land survey system at scales of 1:100,000 or smaller. Supplemental_Information: Procedures_Used: The DLG data sets were acquired on 9-track tape. These data are now available for downloading by anonymous ftp from, ftp://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/DLG/100K/. The DLG data sets are organized in alphabetical order by quadrangle name in the subdirectory public lands. The USGS 1:100,000-scale DLG files (1994) were converted to ARC/INFO format and joined to create a single statewide ARC/INFO data set. All standard USGS DLG major and minor codes were simplified to the attribute scheme describe in the Entity_and_Attribute_Overview section of this documentation file. The data set was processed with the ARC/INFO command CLEAN (ESRI, 1995) with a dangle length of 0 meters and a fuzzy tolerance of 50 meters. Extra label points were deleted in ARCEDIT. The ARC/INFO command ELIMINATE (ESRI, 1995) was used to remove tiny sliver polygons formed between quadrangle edges. The ARC/INFO command DISSOLVE (ESRI, 1995) was used to eliminate quadrangle boundaries. Many mislabeled polygons were corrected, using ARCPLOT (ESRI, 1995) to display the data set and correct polygon attributes. Sections were displayed row-by-row (for example, sections numbers 1-6 from all townships were displayed at once) and column-by-column to help identify mislabeled polygons. When necessary, the USGS 1:100,000-scale and 1:24,000-scale quadrangle maps were used to determine the correct polygon attributes. The major and minor pairs were created and the data set was documented using ARC/INFO DOCUMENT.AML (ESRI, 1995). The ARC/INFO command CLIP (ESRI, 1995) was used to divide the statewide data set into separate data sets by county. ARC/INFO export files and DLG-format files were generated for each county data set. Revisions: Revision 1.0, 2/7/97, Alan Rea. Digital atlas of Oklahoma version. Reviews_Applied_to_Data: The Digital Atlas of Oklahoma was reviewed by 13 technical reviewers. Because of the large volume of data (nearly 1.3 million points, lines or polygons divided into 861 separate data sets) the reviewers could not thoroughly check the accuracy of all geographic features in the data sets. Reviewers were asked to check the topological consistency, tolerances, attribute frequencies and statistics, projection, and geographic extent. The reviewers were asked to check the metadata and other documentation files for completeness and accuracy. Users should exercise caution and judgment in applying these data, and be aware that errors may be present in any or all of the digital map data layers. The first attribute, MERIDIAN, contains the number 11 for surveys based on the Cimarron Meridian (Oklahoma panhandle), or the number 17 for surveys based on the Indian Meridian, covering the remainder of Oklahoma. The second attribute, TOWNSHIP, contains the township number. The third attribute, NS, contains the letter N or S to show whether the township is north or south of the baseline. The fourth attribute, RANGE, contains the range number. The fifth attribute, EW, contains the letter E or W to show if the range is east or west of the meridian. The sixth attribute, SECTION, contains the section number. MERIDIAN, TOWNSHIP, RANGE, and SECTION values of 99 are used for void areas not included in the public land survey system. The attribute, MERIDIAN, in the DLG version is stored in the first major code (MAJOR1) and TOWNSHIP is stored in the first minor code (MINOR1). NS is stored in the second major code (MAJOR2) as integers, where N = 1 and S = 2. RANGE is stored in the second minor code (MINOR2). EW is stored in the third major code (MAJOR3) as integers, where E = 1 and W = 2. SECTION is stored in the third minor code (MINOR3).
