National Oceans Month, June 2007

20th Anniversary of National Estuaries Program 
The National Estuary Program (NEP), established by Congress in 1987, is a very successful community-based program designed to restore and maintain the ecological integrity of estuaries of national significance. First anniversary of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument
On June 15, 2006 President Bush designated the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument within the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Battle of Midway 65th Anniversary Commemorative Events
May 30 - June 4, Hawaii and Midway Atoll, and June 4 Washington, D.C.
A series of events and a commemorative ceremony will honor the heroic courage and sacrifice of those who fought the Battle of Midway from June 4-6, 1942.  The battle was deemed by the U.S. Navy to be one of two defining events in Navy history and by many historians to be the turning point of World War II in the Pacific. NOAA 200th Anniversary Celebrations: Monticello Origins Event

Ocean Kiosks/Interpretive Stations Coastal Ecosystems Learning Center Workshop,
June 6 - 8, Washington, D.C.
The workshop will bring together representatives from the learning center network with NOAA and other federal experts that are developing the Ocean-In-The News Kiosk for the Smithsonian Ocean Hall.  A prototype of the kiosk will be demonstrated and the learning center experts will provide feedback.  Additionally, participants will identify potential components for a network of ocean interpretive stations that would provide a public portal to critical ocean and coastal information. Coastal America’s Coastal Ecosystems Learning Center designation of the Veracruz Aquarium, Mexico
June 14, Veracruz, Mexico. One of Coastal America’s signature programs is the network of Coastal Ecosystem Learning Centers (CELC) which was recently expanded to include an International CELC (ICELC) certification program.  The Veracruz Aquarium event marks the designation of the first International CELC.  The benefits of an ICELC certification include access to technical, financial, and training assistance from Coastal America’s Federal agency partners. NOAA 200th Anniversary Celebrations: From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of America's Coast Survey Poster Exhibit
Opening June 21 Nationwide 
As part NOAA's 200th anniversary celebration, NOAA and the Smithsonian Institution have partnered to offer a free poster exhibit, "From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of America's Coast Survey", to museums, community centers, libraries, and parks nationwide. This 20-poster set explores the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey's history, accomplishments, and scientific contributions. Two hundred venues across the country will receive the poster sets for a mass opening on Thursday, June 21, the first day of summer. 2007 National Marine Aquaculture Summit: “Aquaculture – Making it Work for America” June 26-27, Washington D.C.
The importance of a steady supply of safe, sustainable seafood for the nation will be highlighted at the National Marine Aquaculture Summit. The 2007 Summit will focus on opportunities and challenges for U.S. marine aquaculture. The primary new federal vehicle for expanding domestic marine production is the revised National Offshore Aquaculture Act, so the importance of a new regulatory framework for U.S. federal waters and key research and development initiatives for all marine aquaculture will figure prominently in the discussions.
