Key Literacy Issues

The Institute seeks to strengthen reading and literacy across the lifespan, including the early elementary years. Research plays a central role in this work, as directed by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (as amended). The Institute:

  • Identifies scientifically based research findings that help answer essential questions about literacy development during kindergarten through third grade;
  • Communicates the findings to educators, families, and caregivers in plain language in publications such as Put Reading First: The Research Foundations for Teaching Children to Read and  A Child Becomes A Reader: Kindergarten – Third Grade
  • Studies kindergarten through third grade classrooms that use reading programs based on findings from scientific research
