Adult Literacy

Key Literacy Issues

The Institute seeks to strengthen literacy across the lifespan, including for adults. It has also played an important role in bringing research to the forefront of the government’s efforts to strengthen adult literacy services and reading instruction. The Institute:

  • Identifies scientifically based research findings to support responses and answers to questions about adult literacy.
  • Disseminates those findings to educators, families, and caregivers in plain language in publications such as its Teaching Adults to Read Summary of the five essential components of reading.
  • Examines professional development practices that support adult literacy instruction.
  • Identifies topics to be studied in future research on adult literacy.
