Research

Research plays a central role in building our knowledge of literacy teaching and learning during the middle and high school years. The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the U.S. Department of Education (ED), and other organizations currently sponsor long-term research studies that ultimately will add to our knowledge of adolescent literacy. In the meantime, the National Institute for Literacy collaborated with NICHD and ED to summarize some of the current literature. The summary emphasizes findings from evidence-based research on adolescents to the extent possible, but also includes research on other groups such as younger readers, dyslexic readers, and adult beginning readers.
