Adolescence

Reading Components

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act establishes a definition of reading that guides the Institute’s activities on reading instruction in middle school and high school. The definition identifies five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and text comprehension. These last three components are often especially important for adolescent readers, many of whom struggle to fully understand what they read.
